Okay, so "fart" is a great word. Last night, while I was watching the beautiful Mamaroneck fireworks (that my husband and I so graciously paid for with our ample tax dollars) my beautiful 3 year old niece made some lovely explosions of her own. She farted. Repeatedly. And after every poof of flatulence, she proudly exclaimed, "I farted and it was stinky!"
Bravo Tala. Her name is a Native American word meaning "wolf", but in English I'm sure it would better translate as "little breaker of wind". Tala loves to fart. She says it makes her laugh and it makes her tummy feel good. I too enjoy a good fart, and why shouldn't I?
While I was growing up in the Bronx in a not-so-conservative Italian-American family, we were not allowed to use the word fart. Mom was allowed to fall the "asshole who just cut her off a major fucker", but fart was a bad word. I also couldn't say crap. So, "Holy crap I just made a giant fart" was a deal-breaker.
Even now as I write the word "fart" I feel slightly guilty. When I typed "asshole" and "fucker" I felt nothing but my fingers gingerly touching the keys, but typing "fart" evoked the image of a priest, fire and brimstone. What is my issue with this word, this unholy and dare I say stinky word, "fart"?
The answer is, I'm not sure yet. But I know one thing. I am an adult now Fart-Dammit! And I can say FART whenever I want to. I can also perform the act whenever I want to (thanks to my husband for being so understanding about this) and wherever I want to (thanks again to my husband for being so amused by my fantastic fart fanatics). When I thought about beginning a blog, I thought about so many interests I have. And they all bored me to crap. Ha ha "crap". So I say it loud and I say it proud, fart with me my fellow adults! Fart because you can and will and happily proclaim, "I FARTED AND IT WAS STINKY!!!"
